Extent and volume has, for quite some time now, been governed not by higher temperatures but by blocking high pressure systems which have swept thick, old ice out the Fram Strait. And yet despite that, the DMI modeled ice thickness chart for Jan 21st shows most of the upper Arctic in 2,5-meter thick ice: http://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/icethickness/thk.uk.php
It is the weather—the recurrent, long-duration blocking high pressure systems sweeping old ice south—that is “destroying” Arctic sea ice, not warmer ocean temperatures.
