One could argue “but that still means that it’s near the lowest on record, and the trend line shows we’re going in the wrong direction!” But then look at 2012′ extent — at the long-term median and even above, yet all we hear about 2012 is its lowest extent ever on record. The prioritization, the variability, means that there’s a number of features at work for Arctic extent and that we really shouldn’t be wringing our collective hands over something that’s uncontrollable anyway.
