Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Daily Records Count

Now that 2013 Antarctic Sea Ice Extent has broken the 8th daily record, I thought I would post the updated scoreboard.

2013 has a long, long way to go to break 2010s totals or 2008.  If there were scientists at NSIDC and the MSM instead of propagandists 2008 and 2010 would have made great stories.

Don’t 1998, 1980 and 1979 look so lonely at the bottom of the list?

Year No of Records
2010 129
2008 126
2006 29
2012 24
2007 21
2009 8
2013 8
2000 6
2004 5
1998 4
2005 3
1979 2
1980 1

  1. I take it that these are all-time for each calendar day–thus 365 of them. Meaning that an older year’s record is dropped when a more recent year’s extent is greater. Thus the more recent records surpass all the previous years, making them quite significant.

Two observations: No records remain for the years between 1980 and 1998, suggesting that ice extent was down during this period.
Looking at your chart on the previous post, it appears that 2008 set the records during the summer minimum, some of them now overturned by 2013. 2010 must have been the record setter for the winter maximums.

    1. Actually there are 366 records (leap year).

2012 is the holder of the all time maximums and owns the “crown” at the peak. And a some surrounding day.

2010 holds most of the records from day 150 to day 250 or so when 2012 takes over and then 2010 holds more record as ice declines from the max.

2008 was an amazing outlier with it breaking previous records by over 1,000,000 sq km until this year when 2013 broke a few.
