Sea Ice Update July 17 2014 – Arctic Refuses to Melt Completely Despite Predictions

A quick update for sea ice extent for day 197 of 2014

  • Global Sea Ice Extent is -564,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 28 for the day.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 862,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 3 for the day.
  • Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -1,426,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 32 for the day.

  1. Day 198–NH ice has now lost 47% of its maximum ice extent.

    Those with minimal melt:

    Central Arctic has 98% ice left
    East Siberian Sea 91%
    Canadian Archipelago 83%
    Beaufort Sea 76%
    Chukchi Sea 66%
    Kara Sea 61%

    The Central Arctic is hardly melting, and the others are key to the northern shipping routes.
