So NOAA Sea Ice Index shows a gain of 84,000 Km2 in the Arctic, for a Sept 30 total of 5.53 M Km2. This gives an average extent of 5.21 M Km2 for the month of September 2014.
Comparing NOAA figures for the last 3 years:
Year March Ave Sept Ave Diff MAX-MIN
2014 14.70 5.21 9.49
2013 14.97 5.24 9.73
2012 15.14 3.58 11.56
(NOAA final statistics may differ slightly; these come from averaging the dailies in NOAA archives)
Note the melt extent in 2014 was the smallest since 2006, resulting in 2014 nearly matching 2013 despite a smaller max in March.
Both the last two years exceeded the exceptional 2012 by about 45%.

So much for the Arctic “Death Spiral.”
