What’s at stake this year? If September average is higher than last year, then it supports the recovery narrative. Slightly lower than 2014 (the consensus prediction) and the generally declining trend is supported. A major fall off in ice extent would be followed by mass media alarm bells.

Extent numbers can be a little decieving I am more interested in volume but that’s much harder to keep track of daily…DMI tries to do it…Its going to take a spectacular melt from here to get into the bottom three…I’m calling for a 5.5m min in September but I won’t be surprised if its 6m because I think we will see an earlier refreeze
