That would lead to compaction of the sea ice by reducing extent, but once the winds reverse, then the compacted ice can spread out and perhaps put extent above normal later on in the season. Anything is possible; we’re still seeing effects of the 2015 El Niño play out in the Arctic and will continue to do so for months to come.
The interesting thing is seeing how much of the Antarctic and southern Pacific/Atlantic are below normal with SST. Yes it’s their winter right now, but there’s very little warmth in the sea surface measurements up to 50°S. Imagine if NH SST’s were -2°C anomalous down to that latitude, just how much sea ice would be forming as well as freezing land temperatures. It’s a scary thought.
Some are saying to expect a drop in Arctic extent because there is stormy weather of a cyclonic nature coming out of Siberia.

The slight warming we have had over the past century or so is nothing to do with the sun, of course …
but the cooling is 😉
