Given that Antarctica is always subjected to prolonged easterlies, have the weather systems been skirting much closer to the continent this past summer (and now, as it progresses to winter) or simply been much stronger which thereby pushes ice formation towards the coastline? I have not seen anything to indicate that low SH sea ice extent is due to higher SST’s and can only speculate as to the cause of the record low extent. Do you know of any news releases or other articles detailing what’s going on with the Antarctic atmosphere?

No. But the oscillation is normal. The amplitude keeps increasing.
