  1. Eighth lowest on record, with an angular trajectory comparable to the long-term median and 1SD range. On day 253 in 2016 ice regrowth took a sustained and early upwards jump, while still in recovery mode from the 2015-16 super El NiƱo (which had its most long-lived effects on polar regions) so if, with reduced solar output and below normal SST’s in the North Atlantic, the same angular trajectory repeats within the next 10 days then this year’s extent should be at or above the recent high of 2014. We shall see if the prediction holds up.
