Antarctic Sea Ice Update Oct 28, 2013

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent data has been unavailable for a few days. I emailed NSIDC and today they replied and said:

“Occasional short-term delays and data outages do occur and are usually resolved in a few days. We are currently experiencing such a short-term delay and we will get the issue resolved as quickly as possible.”

Commenter Gary also posted a link to this page that says:

“October 25, 2013: Daily updates to the graph and image are temporarily suspended due to technical difficulties with the data provider.”


  1. I emailed NSIDC about the data outage and this is the reply:

    Caryn Fraundorfer, Oct 31 08:18 (MDT):
    Dear Gary,

    Thank you for contacting the National Snow and Ice Data Center. We will update the ice data images and data when our input data stream from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has resumed. We are hoping that this will happen by the end of the week.

  2. Hi,

    I called and asked them to update the graphs to show the median line without the actual ice data. The “helpful” help desk person said that that wasn’t going to happen.
    I think that they are asking for data manipulation from the source so that the “new data” will reduce the ice area. The NSIDC is part of NOAA. NOAA is a big supporter of AGW.

  3. Update from military who runs the satellite:

    “in general, “operational” in OSCAR simply means that systems are working normally, whether data is made available or not. Right now we do not include information on data availability in OSCAR, but this is envisaged in a future version. I also copy my colleagues who might be able to provide additional information.
