MASIE versus NSIDC – Day 50 – 2016

I  explained the difference between MASIE and NSIDC here.

I still don’t understand why the divergence over time is in one direction only.

The latest graph (showing that as time has passed NOAA’s data is showing less and less ice compared to MASIE) is below.

  1. Is it NSIDC or NASA? I’ve seen Ron implying that the NSIDC is somehow a NOAA branch and not an independent organisation. I’ve tried to find an explanation, but couldn’t find it. Can you guys tell me why you refer to either MASIE or Sea Ice Index data as coming from NOAA?

That should be NOAA instead of NASA, sorry for the confusion.

I see now on the Sea Ice Index data product page: “Funding from the NOAA Climate Data Record program and the NASA DAAC support its work.” But it’s still a NSIDC product. Is there some reason for calling it NOAA data?

      1. Yes, I had noticed. But it’s still on the NSIDC server, and apart from the funding it doesn’t say anywhere that NOAA is providing or processing the data, although one of the people behind MASIE is a NOAA liaison at NSIDC.
