Andy Revkin Annoyed With “Climate Change Contrarians” Being “Energized”

Andy Revkin has posted an attack on the researchers who sailed into infamy in the Antarctic on the ill-fated MV Akademik Shokalskiy.

He is using terms like “bungled trip” , “unessential expedition” ,  “misadventure”,  “distraction from serious research”  and “tarnish the wider field of Antarctic science”.

But reading between the lines, it is clear to me what Revkin is really trying to say.

1) He has never gone to Antarctica and therefore managed to avoid reporting on record sea ice in Antarctica.

2) The attention brought to record sea ice in Antarctica has “energized climate change contrarians“.

I would translate the term “distraction from serious research” as meaning “brought attention to the wrong pole” … the one with record sea ice.

If the bunglers in charge of the expedition had found open water and managed to blame it on climate change, he would have jumped in with both feet trumpeting their success.

Global Sea Ice Extent 900,000 sq km Above 1981-2010 Mean

Did you know Global Sea Ice Extent is 900,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean?

Yes, Arctic Sea Ice Extent is 580,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.

But Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1.47 million sq km above the 1981-2010 mean (the 2nd highest on this day ever).

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent – End of 2013 Report Preview

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is currently running at 1.48 million sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.

Here is a preview of the end of the year stats.

As of yesterdays data, the mean for the whole year is .84 million sq km, which will easily break the previous record of .59 million sq km set in 2008.

The maximum daily anomaly of 1.67 million sq km was set on December 20 which is pretty remarkable considering that is the start of summer.

The maximum anomaly percent was 33.5% which was set on March 10. The 1981-2010 mean for that day is 3.5 million sq km., but on March 10 the extent hit 4.7 million sq km.

10 Feet Thick Ice Stops Icebreaker in Antarctic

The Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy has been stuck in the Antarctic Ice since Monday. The Chinese Ice Breaker  Xue Long, or Snow Dragon got within six miles and it too was stopped by thick ice.

“It got stuck in the ice on Monday night — 15 days after setting out on the second leg of its research trip.

According to Turney, the ship was surrounded by ice up to nearly 10 feet (3 meters) thick. It was about 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont D’Urville, about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart, Tasmania.

The Russian expedition ship is carrying scientists and passengers led by an Australian climate change professor.”

I find it ironic the “climate change professor” led the ship and passengers into 10 foot thick ice. He’s kind of thick. But maybe 10 feet thick ice in the summer is unusual?

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Update as of Dec 17 2013 (Day 351)

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1.5 million sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Thats almost 15% higher.

The mean for the day is 10.25 million sq km and the most recent day’s data is 11.78 million sq km.

After a few days of being in 3rd place Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is now back in 2nd place.

Global Sea Ice 5th Highest For the Day

Apologies. Global Sea Ice is actually 5th highest. Not 3rd as I wrote. Back from a trip. Brain rusty.I misread. Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is  3rd.  Global is not 3rd. It is 5th.

As of Dec 16 2013, Global Sea Ice is the 5th highest for the day, and above the 1981-2010 mean by 900,000 sq km.

2nd Daily Record in a Row Antarctic Sea Ice Extent – 107th For 2013

Day 342 and 343 (Dec 8th/9th) were daily records for Antarctic Sea Ice Extent. That makes them the 106th and 107th records for 2013.

2008 still leads with 122 daily records. 2013 does have 244 1st and 2nd place finishes for in front of 2008 with 160 1st and 2nds.

2013 will probably only set 2 or 3 more records before the records set in 2007 prevent any more.

Heavy ice delays Australian Antarctic icebreaker Aurora Australis

“The summer Australian Antarctic Division program will have to be modified because its icebreaker the Aurora Australis has been delayed in heavy ice.

The ship was due to return to Hobart more than a week ago after a resupply mission, but it is still navigating through heavy ice about 180 nautical miles off the Davis research station.’
