Global Sea Ice Extent is 187,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 15 for the day. Still above normal!
Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,521,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 1 for the day. That smashes the old daily record by 400,000 sq km
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -1,335,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 32 for the day.

July 4 2014 MASIE Update – A slight slowdown in melting. Melting has averaged 140,000 per day until the last one day where it dropped only -44,567.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,530,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 1 for the day. This is 2.3 million sq km higher than the 2002 extent for the same day.
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -1,355,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 32 for the day.

Many AGW true believers dismiss “Global Sea Ice” as an unimportant metric. I’m guessing that in a couple of days it will become important to them.

If I was an alarmists I would suggest that at the current rate of increase, by 2100 Antarctica will be completely inaccessible by ship.

But I’m not. I do wonder if the the spike in 1979 is an artifact of the satellite at that time, or if it is where we are now (remember the area to the left of 1979 just wasn’t recorded so we don’t know what it really looks like) and once the AMO cools Antarctica Sea Ice Extent will shrink and the Arctic will grow.
