Global Sea Ice Extent is 606,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 7 for the day.
Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,301,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 1 for the day.
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -695,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 34 for the day.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,458,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.

Update: Since March 27 Antarctic Sea Ice Extent has been more than two standard deviations above normal. 82 days out of 126.

A quick update for sea ice extent for day 126 of 2014:

Global Sea Ice Extent is 861,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 4 for the day.
Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,517,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 1 for the day. It is also the 59th daily record for 2014.
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -657,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 34 for the day.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Oscillation Pattern Return

I don’t know what it means, but I’ve been aware of an oscillation pattern in Antarctic Sea Ice Extent for some time.

A while ago I noted the time between oscillations. Today I am just noting the size of the oscillations.

The current satellite record only started around 1978 (and only a partial years data exists). And until 1986, data only exists for alternating days.

Consider that the AMO is about 66 years long. And 1982 (the end of the big oscillations in the early part of the satellite record) is about 33 years ago I wonder if the big oscillation pattern will come to an end soon in the same way it came to an end after 1982? (Update: Or will it oscillate for 33 years?)

We don’t what happened off to the left of the graph (the pre-satellite era) with certainty. Or why these oscillations were once huge, and then settled down and then resumed their large oscillations again.

A quick update for sea ice extent for day 124 of 2014:

Global Sea Ice Extent is 950,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.
Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,529,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. 57th Daily Record for 2014. Broke the Old Record for the day by 560,000 sq km
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -580,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.

Sea Ice Update April 30 2014 – Antarctic Sea Ice 52nd daily record – Global Sea Ice 980,000 sq km Above Normal

A quick update for sea ice extent for day 119 of 2014:

Global Sea Ice Extent is 981,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.
Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,388,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That’s the 52nd daily record for 2014.
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -407,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. Only 190,000 sq km melted in the last 11 days. Last year 600,000 sq km melted in same 11 days.

Sea Ice Update April 28 2014 – Antarctic Sea Ice 50% higher than 1980! – Global Sea Ice 1.02 million sq km Above Normal

A quick update for sea ice extent for day 117 of 2014:

Global Sea Ice Extent is 1,027,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.
Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,461,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is the 50th daily record of 2014. For day 117, 2014 Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is is 50% higher than 1980!
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -434,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.

Sea Ice Update April 26 2014 – Antarctic Sea Ice 48th Daily Record of 2014 – Global Sea Ice 1.02 million sq km Above Normal

A quick update for sea ice extent for day 115 of 2014:

Global Sea Ice Extent is 1,016,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.
Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,464,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That’s the 48th daily record.
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -448,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. Melt practically stopped dead for the last week. Only 40,000 sq km melted since day 108. Last year 285,000 sq km melted in the same period.

A quick update for sea ice extent for day 113 of 2014:

Global Sea Ice Extent is 1,013,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.
Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,488,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is the 18th daily record in a row and 46th for 2014
Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -476,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. Day 113 is actually higher than the previous 5 days. Maybe near normal 80N temperatures have something to do with it.
