Climatologists Are No Einsteins

Understatement of the Decade.

Freeman Dyson:

“I just think they don’t understand the climate,” he said of climatologists. “Their computer models are full of fudge factors.”

“The models are extremely oversimplified,” he said. “They don’t represent the clouds in detail at all. They simply use a fudge factor to represent the clouds.”

William Happer:

“There are people who just need a cause that’s bigger than themselves,” said Happer. “Then they can feel virtuous and say other people are not virtuous.”

That reminds of the joke Judith Curry deleted from her blog the other day:

Q: Why did god invent phrenologists?

A: So climate scientists would have a profession to look down upon.

The Great Recycling Con – Sorted Recycling All Ends Up In The Same Landfill

I knew it. I tell people this. And they insist it isn’t true.

Millions of tons of household rubbish painstakingly sorted by families for recycling is being dumped abroad.

Whitehall has admitted that waste from recycling bins is being shipped to countries including China, India and Indonesia, where much of it ends up in landfill.

In papers published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, ministers concede that what happens to the 12 million tons of ‘green’ waste shipped abroad every year is largely beyond their control.”

‘Most people believe their rubbish is recycled in this country.

Now it turns out there are container ships coming here from China filled with televisions and computers … and going home stacked with containers filled with our recycled rubbish.

That is shameful.’

David Appell – Maybe Quack Soup Would Be A Better Title?

Some blogger named David Appell was sounding the AGW alarm yesterday (for the millionth time I think)  about dangerous Arctic Greening.

I did a post about how it has warmed in the past in the Arctic here.

I noted that temperatures dropped 1.8C from the 40s to the 1960s in that post and then it warmed again to about 1.2C warmer than 1940s.

Thats about 2F over 70 years.

But I just can’t get past the insanity of his post. He is claiming temperatures will rise 20F.

“The paper says climate models predict the shift will be 20° more by the end of the century. That’s about 1400 miles.

Denver will move to Mexico City. Saskatchewan will move to Houston. Fairbanks, Alaska will move to Portland, Oregon, and Portland will move somewhere equivalent to Miami’s latitude. ”

Maybe Quack Soup would be a better title for his blog?

Conservation group sues to stop California solar plant

It’s only fair …

“LOS ANGELES – A U.S. conversation group has sued the federal government over its approval of a major solar power plant in the California desert, the latest in a string of challenges to the nation’s renewable energy goals from the environmental community.

According to court papers, the non-profit Western Watersheds Project alleged U.S. regulators approved Brightsource Energy’s 370-megawatt Ivanpah solar energy plant without conducting adequate environmental reviews, and asked the court to order the defendants to withdraw their approvals.”

“”In an ill-conceived rush to accommodate massive renewable energy projects … the federal defendants precipitously approved unnecessarily destructive energy development of the California Desert Conservation Area without first conducting adequate environmental reviews. The complaint said the project’s approval process failed to analyze and mitigate the Ivanpah plant’s impact on migratory birds, the desert tortoise, which is a threatened species under federal law, desert bighorn sheep, groundwater resources and rare plants.“”

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Daily Records Count

Now that 2013 Antarctic Sea Ice Extent has broken the 8th daily record, I thought I would post the updated scoreboard.

2013 has a long, long way to go to break 2010s totals or 2008.  If there were scientists at NSIDC and the MSM instead of propagandists 2008 and 2010 would have made great stories.

Don’t 1998, 1980 and 1979 look so lonely at the bottom of the list?

Year No of Records
2010 129
2008 126
2006 29
2012 24
2007 21
2009 8
2013 8
2000 6
2004 5
1998 4
2005 3
1979 2
1980 1

How Do You Miss A 10,000 Tonne Meteorite?

Q: How Do You Miss A 10,000 Tonne Meteorite?

A: You Squander Trillions on fixing “Dangerous” Global Warming even if the warming paused 16 years ago.

30 Hiroshima Bombs

“The meteor explosion appears to be one of the most stunning cosmic events above Russia since the 1908 Tunguska Event in which a massive blast most scientists blame on an asteroid or a comet ripped through Siberia.
Russian scientists were initially reported to have estimated its mass to be around 10 tonnes, but Nasa later claimed it was considerably larger with a mass closer to 10,000 tonnes.”

You know, if I was as deranged as one of the AGW cult leaders, I would be crying about how sad it was that all those people in Russia survived and ruined a great opportunity to shame the world into ACTION and pass a global meteorite tax to raise money for asteroid detection.

Putin invites Europeans to Siberia for firewood

Putin invites Europeans to Siberia for firewood  – thanks Steve (Paris) World class mockery of the stupidity of Europe’s Energy Policies.

“The German public does not like the nuclear power industry for some reason,” Putin said, adding that he would not comment on it. “But I cannot understand what fuel you will take for heating,” he said anyway.

“You do not want gas, you do not develop the nuclear power industry, so you will heat with firewood?” Putin asked, as reported by Itar-Tass. “Then you will have to go to Siberia to buy the firewood there,” he said, adding that Europeans “do not even have firewood.”

2012 Average Arctic Sea Ice Extent so far

Yesterday I did a post claiming average Arctic Sea Ice Extent was higher than 2007 up to day 290,

I had to issue a correction.

It turned out Arctic Sea Ice Extent was just slightly higher than 2011, but not higher than 2007.

On day 291, 2012’s lead over 2011 has shrunk from 4,633 sq km to 3393.

However, 2007’s  lead over 2012 of 1468 sq km has shrunk to 1104.

And to be clear, just because 2012 has slightly more sea ice than 2012 does not mean the end of the world happened in 2011.

The AGW cult is still quite sure we are now doomed because of the 2nd lowest amount of Arctic Sea Ice Extent (and a cyclone) occurred this year.
