Sea Ice Update July 10 2014 -Antarctica Dives

A quick update for sea ice extent for day 190 of 2014

  • Global Sea Ice Extent is -230,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 21 for the day.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,137,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 1 for the day.
  • Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -1,367,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 32 for the day.

  1. The UV SFU increased to +200 due to the Sun. It takes about 15 to 20 days for the energy to reach the Poles. Watch for an increase in Ice now that the UV is decreasing. This cyclic increase/decrease is due non-uniform Solar activity [Sun Spots,UV]. It takes about 28 days for the Sun to complete one revolution. So, every 28 days the UV is up and then in 14 days, the UV is down.

    UV up -> less ice at both Poles [less freezing/or more melting]
    UV down ->more ice at both Poles [more freezing/ or less melting]
