AMO by Month from 1909 as of Jan 2015.

The AMO syncs up with climate change very nicely. This is just a view I like. The deepest blue sections are the 1970s.

1978/79 was the coldest winter in US history.




  1. When I worked for Environment Canada, my first posting was at Eureka. In Feb. 1979, they set the North American record cold mean month temperature of -47.9C (thankfully I arrived in March), so this does line up well with it being the coldest in the USA…


  2. I have to look into this more. At first glance, I notice the dip in 1934 which was an unusually severe Winter in Eastern NA that broke the pattern of years immediately before and after.
