Antrarctic Sea Ice Update Feb 24 2014 – Three Days Up

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent has risen for three days in a row.  It rose 13,000 sq km and then 7,000 sq km and then 13,000 sq km.  Day 51 is potentially to be the minimum, but is still too early to call.

Extent is 653,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean which is  22.5%.

A slightly different view today. Only 10 days on each size of Day 54. Click for bigger.

Sea Ice Update February 22 2014 – Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Still 22.5% Above The Mean

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice is 98,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 0.54% below the mean. Daring to use an unpopular word, Global Sea Ice Extent is normal.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice is  647,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is 22.5% above the mean.  Antarctic Sea Ice Extent rose 13,500 sq km in the last day.
  • Arctic Sea Ice is 745,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 4.86% below the mean . Arctic Sea Ice Extent has risen 280,000 sq km in last 3 days.

Sea Ice Update February 20 2014 – Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Still 23% above normal

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice is 149,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 0.8% below the mean.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice is  671,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is 23% above the mean.  Antarctic Sea Ice Extent fell 40,000 sq km. and hast not reach minimum yet.
  • Arctic Sea Ice is 820,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 5.4% below the mean . That is 4th lowest for this day.

Antarctic Sea Ice Update February 19 2014 – 672,000 sq km Above The Mean – Day 49

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 672,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Which is 23% above the mean.

From day 48 to day 49 extent fell by 22,000 sq km. Extent is still 16,000 sq km higher than day 46.

So day 46 could still turn out to be the day of the minimum Antarctic Sea Ice Extent for 2014. But it could still fall below that.

Antarctic Sea Ice Update February 18 2014 – 697,000 sq km Above The Mean – Day 48

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 697,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Which is 23.9% above the mean. (Lots of people hate me using the term “normal”).

The mean for day 48 is 2.91 million sq km. Sea Ice Extent for day 48 is 3.61 million sq km.

From day 47 to day 48 extent fell by 27,000 sq km. From day 46 to 47 extent actually rose by 64,000 sq km (I mistakenly said 38,000 yesterday).

So day 46 could turn out to be the day of the minimum Antarctic Sea Ice Extent for 2014. But it could still fall below that. No predictions from me.

  • Antarctic Sea Ice is  706,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is 25% above “normal”.  Antarctic Sea Ice Extent actually rose 38,000 sq km from day 46 to day 47. Minimum could be near.
  • Arctic Sea Ice is 799,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 5.25% below “normal”.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent pdate February 14 2014 – 23.4% Above Normal

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent only dropped 5960 sq km from day 43 to day 44. Which brings it to within 9310 sq km of the 2008 record for highest minimum. That means at least one more day with the chance of a new record occurring. Maybe two. It isn’t impossible for this to be minimum, just unlikely. The earliest minimum was day 43 in 1996.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is still 702,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean, which is 23.4% above the mean.
