Beware of environmentalists coming up with brilliant plans to save the world. And fuels with “bio” in front of the name.

… in the mid-2000s, Western nations, led by the United States, began drafting environmental laws that encouraged the use of vegetable oil in fuels — an ambitious move to reduce carbon dioxide and curb global warming. But these laws were drawn up based on an incomplete accounting of the true environmental costs. Despite warnings that the policies could have the opposite of their intended effect, they were implemented anyway, producing what now appears to be a calamity with global consequences.

The tropical rain forests of Indonesia, and in particular the peatland regions of Borneo, have large amounts of carbon trapped within their trees and soil. Slashing and burning the existing forests to make way for oil-palm cultivation had a perverse effect: It released more carbon. A lot more carbon. NASA researchers say the accelerated destruction of Borneo’s forests contributed to the largest single-year global increase in carbon emissions in two millenniums, an explosion that transformed Indonesia into the world’s fourth-largest source of such emissions.

EU Biofuels = 80% More CO2 Than Oil

No surprise for anyone paying attention.

A study published in late April by an environmental group found that Europe’s biofuel regulations created 80 percent more carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than the conventional oil they replaced. The report estimates the biofuels create new emissions equivalent to putting an extra 12 million cars on the road.

Europe has been blending small percentages of biofuels into conventional gasoline and oil and diesel specifically to reduce CO2 emissions. The continent plans to require biofuels account for 10 percent of all fuel used by 2020. The EU’s CO2 emissions are estimated to have increased by 0.7 percent last year relative to 2014, even though the continent has spent an estimated $1.2 trillion financially supporting green and bio-energy with the goal of lowering CO2 emissions.

 

‘Green’ Biodiesel Has Increased Emissions

What a shocker.

The use of supposedly ‘green’ biodiesel to hit EU renewable energy targets has actually significantly increased greenhouse gas emissions, a new study finds.

By 2020, continued use of biodiesel derived from vegetable oil will increase total EU transport emissions by almost four per cent compared with using its fossil fuel alternative, according to analysis by Transport & Environment, a green group.

That is roughly equivalent to putting an extra 12 million cars to the road, it says.

Countries across Europe have blended small percentages of biofuels into petrol and diesel in recent years in an attempt to cut emissions and to hit the EU’s renewable energy directive (RED), which requires 10 per cent of transport energy to come from renewable sources by 2020.

But Transport & Environment says the EU’s own studies show that producing biodiesel from food crops – in particular soy and palm oil – is significantly worse for the environment than producing regular diesel.

Wild Bees Threatened By Biofuels!!!

Wild Bees are in trouble according to the this article. They trot out the usual blame (climate change) but then get to the real culprit.

Pesticides, climate change, and diseases threaten wild bees—but the new study also shows that their decline may be caused by the conversion of bee habitat into cropland. In eleven key states where the new study shows bees in decline, the amount of land tilled to grow corn spiked by two hundred percent in five years—replacing grasslands and pastures that once supported bee populations. “These results reinforce recent evidence that increased demand for corn in biofuel production has intensified threats to natural habitats in corn-growing regions,” the new study notes.

Ethanol increased tilling of marginal land for corn because of the ethanol subsidies.

This was the first-ever attempt to simultaneously map the trends in wild bee abundance based on recent land conversion and the demand for pollination of different crops across the nation.

Researchers from University of Vermont conducted the first national study for mapping wild bees and found that wild bees are disappearing rapidly from US major farmlands including California’s Central Valley, which is known for its almond production, the Midwest’s corn belt, and the Mississippi River valley. If the trend continues, it will cost farmers heavily and may ruin crop production in US.

Study suggests that more than $3 billion of US agricultural economy depends upon pollinators like wild bees for the reproduction of their crops and around 39% US crop regions rely on these native pollinators and spend millions of dollars annually to rent beehives.

But researchers have found there is a mismatch between the rising demand for pollination and availability of wild bees. They estimate that wild bee population has declined 23% from 2008 to 2013.

Biofuels do more harm than good, UN warns

Haven’t the “deniers” been saying this for a long time? Biofuels are a cruel joke on the poor. Driving up food prices and creating more CO2.

“The United Nations will officially warn that growing crops to make “green” biofuel harms the environment and drives up food prices, The Telegraph can disclose.

A leaked draft of a UN report condemns the widespread use of biofuels made from crops as a replacement for petrol and diesel. It says that biofuels, rather than combating the effects of global warming, could make them worse.

The draft report represents a dramatic about-turn for the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).”
