Antarctic Sea Ice Extent July 29 2014 – Zigzag – 131st Daily Record

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,107,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.

After dropping 90,000 sq km two days ago, ice extent rose 100,000 sq km the next day.

131 daily records in 2014. And 209 out of 209 in the top 5.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Update – 3rd Daily Record in a Row and 26th for the Year

On day 92, Antarctica Sea Ice Extent has been a daily record on 26 days. 92 out of 92 have been in the top 5. Of course the last daily record was only 630 sq km above 2008. Close, but still a record.

The following is all 92 days. A 1 is a daily record, a 2 is 2nd place etc. A . is lower than 9th. There are no . for Antarctica.

Antarctic Sea Ice Update February 19 2014 – 672,000 sq km Above The Mean – Day 49

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 672,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Which is 23% above the mean.

From day 48 to day 49 extent fell by 22,000 sq km. Extent is still 16,000 sq km higher than day 46.

So day 46 could still turn out to be the day of the minimum Antarctic Sea Ice Extent for 2014. But it could still fall below that.

Antarctic Sea Ice Update February 18 2014 – 697,000 sq km Above The Mean – Day 48

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 697,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Which is 23.9% above the mean. (Lots of people hate me using the term “normal”).

The mean for day 48 is 2.91 million sq km. Sea Ice Extent for day 48 is 3.61 million sq km.

From day 47 to day 48 extent fell by 27,000 sq km. From day 46 to 47 extent actually rose by 64,000 sq km (I mistakenly said 38,000 yesterday).

So day 46 could turn out to be the day of the minimum Antarctic Sea Ice Extent for 2014. But it could still fall below that. No predictions from me.

Antarctic Sea Ice – 24% and 738,000 sq km Above Normal – Day 42

A week ago I was sure a new record would be set for highest minimum. Two days ago I was sure the record would not be set. Now I’m not predicting.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 738,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Which is 24% above. The anomaly was slightly higher today because of the minimal melt – 30,000 sq km.

Extent is 3.805 million sq km, and is still 110,000 sq km above the record highest minimum set in 2008.

I’ve added the 2008 Highest Minimum point to this graph. Data is here. Click for bigger.

Antarctic Sea Ice – 717,000 sq km Above Normal – Day 41

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 717,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Which is 23% above. Today was the first non-record day in 18 days.

Extent is 3.83 million sq km, and is still 140,000 sq km above the record highest minimum set in 2008.

I’ve added the 2008 Highest Minimum point to this graph. (But it isn’t looking as good for a new record now). Data is here. Click for bigger.
