Antarctic Sea Ice AREA Near All-Time Record Too – Day 255 – 29,600 sq km Short of All-Time Record

Update: An all-time record was set the next day

I usually graph Sea Ice Extent. Every once in a while I graph Sea Ice Area.

“A simplified way to think of extent versus area is to imagine a slice of swiss cheese. Extent would be a measure of the edges of the slice of cheese and all of the space inside it. Area would be the measure of where there is cheese only, not including the holes. That is why if you compare extent and area in the same time period, extent is always bigger.”

Antarctic Sea Ice Area is within 29,600 sq km of an all time record (which occurred in 2007 at 16.23238 million sq km).

Day 255 is 5th behind 2 days in 2007 and 2 days in 2012.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Sep 14 2014 – Amazing – Another All-Time Record

Update: And another record

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Sept 14 2014 – 1,191,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Data for Day 256. Data here.

Amazing. Day 256 has broken the day 255 all-time record by 110,000 sq km. And the daily record from 2013 was broken by 230,000 sq km.

History making.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Sept 13 2014 – NEW ALL-TIME RECORD!!!!

Update: A 3rd all-time record has been set

Update: Another record was set the next day.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Sept 13 2014 – 1,121,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Data for Day 255. Data here.

This is a new All-Time Record. Breaking the record set in 2013 by 48,000 sq km.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Sep 07 2014 – Daily Record Smashed By 290,000 sq km

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Sep 07 2014 – 986,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Data for Day 249. Data here.

Wow. The old Daily Record is Smashed By 290,000 sq km.

Only 37 days had more Antarctic Sea Ice Extent. One of those days was in 2006. All the rest were in 2012 and 2013.

Antarctica , Sea Ice, Ice Sheets and Wind Excuses

Over at the LA Times they are making excuses for why there is record breaking sea ice in Antarctica.

One of the excuses is that “global warming is strengthening circumpolar winds”.  There is very little evidence that “global warming” would actually increase wind. Any change in winds is tenuous and could be cyclic.

However, the trouble with that excuse is that an increase (or change caused by cycles like the AMO/PDO etc)  in circumpolar wind in Antarctica would prevent snow accumulation and cause ablation of the ice surface which would then appear as “melting” and it would be nothing of the sort.
