Putin was changing the map while Europe was saving the climate

It is scary to think about how stupid some of the world’s politicans have been. Europe and its big green collaborators have fought long and hard to stop fracking in Europe. Putin got his money’s worth.

“Europe has had nearly a decade — since Moscow cut off gas supplies to the region for the first time– to ready itself for renewed Russian misbehavior, but has been caught as flatfooted as Obama. Instead of reducing their dependence on gas from Ukraine and Russia, the leaders of Western Europe have chosen to combat climate change. Instead of investing in secure energy, the EU has invested in green energy, driving up energy costs, reducing competitiveness, and allowing Putin to remain in the driver’s seat.

Russia today supplies 30 percent of Europe’s natural gas; half of that flows through Ukraine. In 2006, when the Kremlin first cut exports to the region, Siberian gas provided only 20 percent of EU consumption.

The Incredibly Stupid Journey – Wood to DRAX

The Incredibly Stupid Journey graphic from the Daily Mail article on the trees journey from the USA to the DRAX wood burning power plant in the U.K.

MoS2 Template Master

Isn’t this insane?

The UK is committed by law to a radical shift to renewable energy. By 2020, the proportion of Britain’s electricity generated from ‘renewable’ sources is supposed to almost triple to 30 per cent, with more than a third of that from what is called ‘biomass’.

The only large-scale way to do this is by burning wood

So the UK is switching from burning high-CO2 coal to even higher-CO2 wood imported from the USA.

In the longer term, the Government has decreed that customers will pay £105 per MW/hr for Drax’s biomass electricity” … instead of the going rate of  £50 per MW/hr.

This quote is hilarious and sad. “‘We’re a power company. We’ve been told to take coal out of the equation. What would you have us do – build a dirty great windfarm?’”

This is really, really sad. They lied and said they didn’t use whole trees, but they do. And then they said they grew back quickly. But they don’t.

Clear-cut wetlands cannot be replanted” and it could take 100 years to regrow.

Read it all and weep over what the insane AGW Cult has brought about.

AGW Cult: “Run Away!”

Another in a long line of AGW Cult Leaders runs away from debate.

“The president of the Irish National Trust has refused to debate a leading sceptic of man-made global warming. Professor John Sweeney of ‘An Tasice, the Irish National Trust’, had been due to debate Dr Benny Peiser of the Global Warming Policy Foundation on the RTE show ‘Prime Time’, but pulled out when he learnt who his opponent was.

An Taisce issued a statement saying: “We looked forward to contributing to the debate on how we should deal with the serious problems that ‘Climate Change’ will present to our children and grandchildren.

“However, we have since learnt that Prime Time will be flying a ‘Climate Denier‘ in from the UK for the night. “

The AGW Cult is terrified of debating “sceptics” because “sceptics” are better informed.

NSF Beclowns Itself With Scare Story About Genghis Khan And Perfect Weather

According to PNAS and the NSF and the Daily Mail, Genghis Khan conquered Asia because an ideal combination of warmth and rainfall caused grass production to rise..

All this conjecture about perfect weather leading to huge crops resulting in Genghis Khan conquering of Asia comes from the tree rings of only 17 trees.

“Between 1211 and 1225 – the exact time of the Mongols’ rise – central Mongolia saw one of its wettest, and warmest, periods for 1,000 years

“We propose that these climate conditions promoted high grassland productivity and favored the formation of Mongol political and military power.”

“They think the conditions created those needed for a boost in lush growth of grass, which would have fuelled the soldiers’ horses and fattened their livestock. The good weather lasted from 1211 to 1225 – the exact period when Genghis Khan and his armies rose to prominence.”

“Such a strong and unified center would have required a concentration of resources that only higher productivity could have sustained, in a land in which extensive pastoral production does not normally provide surplus resources,” the paper states.”

The incredible leap in logic from 17 tree rings is breathtaking. Maybe some goat herd tethered  goats to the trees and the urinated on them. There are many explanations for why a few trees grew better for exactly 14 years.

But even more amazing is that the lesson “we” the gullible should learn is that extreme weather will bring drought!

“The researchers said the trees, some of them more than 1,000 years old, gave them an indication of what the future could hold for the region, with drought and other extreme weather likely to become more common in central Asia.”

The stupidity is alarming. First they claim than natural variation in climate brought warm moist conditions to Mongolia and in fact brought perfect growing conditions … and their conclusion is to worry about drought and extreme weather.

What a waste of grant money.

Winter Rainfall UK 1910 to Jan 2014

Because of the floods, they are arguing about the amount of rainfall due to “climate change” over in the UK. Looking at the data from the UK Met for winter rainfall, it appears rainfall goes up and down.

I wonder if the usual AGW alarmist media blamed climate change for the dry period 2009 to 2011? Do I have to ask? Of course they did!

Guardian 17 November 2011: As well as the recent dry weather, water companies and environment regulators are expecting the UK to have more frequent dry winters as a result of climate change.

Hail Mary Pass Attempt By Warmists to Claim Antarctica Sea Ice is Not Increasing

David Appell was kind enough to alert me to a paper written by I. Eisenman, W. N. Meier, and J. R. Norris.

They titled their paper “A spurious jump in the satellite record: is Antarctic sea ice really expanding?”

I don’t plan to demean myself by spending a lot of time on this silly hail mary pass attempt. But I will post the evidence from the papers own supplemental materials.

That evidence was pointed out by P.R. Holland in an interactive comment here.

“This paper contains solid and important science and I congratulate the authors on their
vigilance. It is certainly important to know that the uncertainties in the ice area/extent
timeseries might be larger than thought (depending upon how this finding is addressed
by the author of the timeseries in question).

However, doesn’t Figure S5 in the supplementary material show that whatever the
source of the Bootstrap issue, there is no doubt that Antarctic sea ice is increasing in
both area and extent? The trends appear significant whichever of the three time series
one chooses. Even if one discards Bootstrap altogether on the basis of this paper, the
NASA Team series clearly shows significant increases. These two facts imply that the
title of this paper is misleading, and so is much of the discussion and abstract. The
clearly significant increases in all 3 datasets are not accurately reflected by the paper
text, abstract, or title.

With the eyes of the climate change lobbies (on both sides) watching this debate, it
is very important that papers’ titles, abstract, and conclusions accurately convey the
facts. Very few journalists will check the content of the paper before reporting its title,
and no-one should be expected to examine the supplementary figures of a paper.”

Figure S5 from supplement here. The yellow circled items are the NASA team data that is not using the bootstrap algorithm.

Fahrenheit 451 IPCC Special Edition

Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury published in 1953. It is regarded as one of his best works. The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and “firemen” burn any that are found.”

JoAnne Nova has an important story about a journal being shutdown just because it had the temerity to publish a paper questioning the IPCC conclusions.

“… the special issue editors ultimately submitted their conclusions in which they “doubt the continued, even accelerated, warming as claimed by the IPCC project” “

“We at Copernicus Publications wish to distance ourselves from the apparent misuse of the originally agreed aims & scope of the journal and decided on 17 January 2014 to cease the publication of PRP”

When someone brings up the old 6,000 papers all agree or 97% agree that global warming is real, just point back the Joanne Nova post. Because keeping “sceptics papers” out of the literature has been the modus operandi of the AGW cult for a long, long time.

SHAMEFUL: Obama to Give Wind Farms 30-Year Pass on Eagle Deaths

Slaughtering Eagles will soon be legal thanks to Obama.

This is Shameful.

“The Obama administration is about to approve a rule that will ensure the death of golden and bald eagles for the next 30 more years.
Hundreds of thousands of birds die each year flying into the deadly turbine blades atop the soaring towers that compose wind farms.

The rule will give wind farms thirty year permits for the “non purposeful take of eagles-that is where the take is associated with but
not the purpose of, the activity.’’ The take of eagles is also a euphemism for the slaughter of them.”
