Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Day 14 2014: Only 9370 sq km Off The Daily Record

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent on day 14 was only 9370 sq km below the record set in 2008.

Currently extent is 1.47 million sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. Thats 28% higher.

Extent is also more than TWO Standard Deviations above the mean. And has been since Dec 26th.  190 days in 2013 were over TWO standard deviations above the mean.

Baby Birds Doomed By Lightbulb Ban

Baby Birds are going to die.

“Ottawa’s Wild Bird Care Centre has put the call out for incandescent light bulbs, which it uses to provide warmth for injured and recovering birds, after the federal government banned manufacturers from making the bulbs.
In Canada, the more energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs are considered the norm. The incandescent light bulbs use more power, but they are also warmer and serve an important role inside incubators.
“As the light bulb is on, it will obviously warm things up and then the setting will turn it off to keep the right temperature,” explained Mireille Goguen, who works at the centre.”

SAVE THE BABY BIRDS!!!

Call the Prime Minister of Canada.

Great Lakes: Earliest the ice had frozen here since the 1930s

It appears “Global Warming” can make ice freeze early too. Ha!

(NEW YORK) — In the midst of record-breaking bitter cold, the U.S. Coast Guard has been relentlessly fighting against ice buildup in the Great Lakes region in an effort to keep important shipping channels open.

“The Coast Guard said it was the earliest the ice had frozen here since the 1930s, and the river connecting Lakes Superior and Huron has been some of the toughest ice they have seen. With cutting through ice, the noise is loud and constant.”

Polar vortex killed at least 21

Brrrrrrrrrr.

“Authorities reported at least 21 cold-related deaths across the country since Sunday, including seven in Illinois and six in Indiana. At least five people died after collapsing while shoveling snow, while several victims were identified as homeless people who either refused shelter or didn’t make it to a warm haven soon enough.

In Missouri on Monday, a 1-year-old boy was killed when the car he was riding in struck a snow plow, and a 20-year-old woman was killed in a separate crash after her car slid on ice and into the path of a tractor-trailer.

In a phenomenon that forecasters said is actually not all that unusual, all 50 states saw freezing temperatures at some point Tuesday. That included Hawaii, where it was 18 degrees atop Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent 1.15 million sq km Above 2013

So far in 2014, Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1.15 million sq km above 2013 and 1.54 million sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.

More remarkably it is only 400,000 sq km below the extraordinary high extent that occurred at a similar period in 2008.

Extent has been more than two standard deviations above the mean since Dec 26 2013 and one standard deviation above the mean since May 29 2013.

Green Hypocrisy

“When they’ve got scientific evidence on their side, green campaigners spew hate speech about the evil science deniers on the other side. But the moment a scientific consensus attacks some cherished green myth (organic good, GMO bad, for example), they spew hate speech against scientists as corporate shills.”

Instapundit

Yup. Ever try and argue with a greenie that banning DDT killed millions? They get ugly really quick.

NOAA USA – Why is February Such A Key Month?

From 1895 to 1998 the Contiguous USA warmed at a very small rate of .78F per century. The NOAA graph is here.

The interesting thing is that 34% of the warming occurred in the month of February.  January even had a slight cooling trend.

From 1998 to 2013,  the USA cooled at a rate of -3.33F per century. February was responsible for 66% of the cooling.

Any ideas? Is it an NOAA artifact or something else? It seems strange that CO2 would prefer February for 100 years and then forsake it. 🙂

Graphs for each month/period below. (The percentages do not add up properly because some months were going in opposite direction of overall trend, but they give an idea of the magnitude)
