Once Upon A Time – 667 Hours of Bright Sunshine in A Month

Once upon a time Environment Canada used to collect bright sunshine data for well over 250 weather stations. Now they are down to 7.

One commenter told us about experiencing over 500 hours of sunshine in one month when he was up in Eureka Nunavut (it was NWT when he was there).

I thought I would post the top 50 sunniest months (total hours of bright sunshine) ever in Canada. Of course they are all in the far north of Canada.

The winner is Eureka. 667 hours of bright sunshine in May of 1987. Sadly Eureka no longer collects bright sunshine data (it stopped around May 2005)

The highest sunshine total for a weather station not in the north is VICTORIA GONZALES HTS. 425 hours of bright sunshine for July 1958. See table at bottom for non-northern stations.

Canada Feb 2013

According to the Environment Canada “Normals”, Canada was warmer than the 1971-2000 average in Feb 2013.

The warmth was concentrated in the far west and the far east.

The middle was slightly warmer or slightly cooler. And the Arctic was mostly cooler than normal.

Extreme Weather In Canada – 1936 is tops using +10C or -10C

As a follow up to yesterdays post about monthly anomalies in Canada of +15C  or higher and -15C and colder, I thought I would take a look what happens if I set the bar at +10C  or -10C.

I am using Environment Canada Normals from their monthly summaries. The values are the anomaly from the 1971-2000 average (the Normals).

In 1936, 3.6% of the monthly anomalies were -10C or colder than normal. 

A -10C or lower deviation from normal for a whole month is definitely extreme! 

And notice 1982 is the most recent year to make the top 25.

Only .688% of the anomalies were 10C or higher in 2006. Thats less than 1/5th of the largest percentage of cold anomalies. It was also 6 years ago.

Environment Canada has Normals for some of its stations. They get a calculated anomaly in relation to the 1971-2000 average.

193 stations have had a monthly anomaly of -15C or lower. 51 of those occurred in 1936.

Only 16 stations have had a monthly anomaly of +15C or higher. None of those have occurred since 1994. (See below)

Canada – Grid Square Choices – 5×5 = Warming and 1×1 = Cooling

Update: There are 54 5×5 grid squares in Canada with EC normals with 170 datapoints in the last 15 years. 29 are warming and 25 are cooling.

There are 199 1×1 grid squares using the same data. 116 are cooling and 83 are warming.

Previously I have looked at the 15 year trend for Environment Canada data up to Nov 2012 using 1×1 grids here, and 5×5 grids here.

Using 1×1 grid squares,  Canada is cooling at -0.089C / decade.

Using 5×5 grid squares, Canada is warming at 0.053C / decade.

Don’t the big guys like to use 5×5 grids? What a shock.

Canada October 2012 – 15 Year Trends (A lot of cooling)

This is a map of  Environment Canada Stations that are part of the “normals” and have 170 or more datapoints in the last 180 months (15 years) as of October 2012.

The circle size is proportion to the warming or cooling.

When some people say Canada is “warming”, I would disagree and say Western Canada is definitely cooling for 15 years and a small part of Eastern Canada clustered around the big cities and a couple of arctic stations are warming.
