Burn Wood – Save the Planet

I love wood stoves. There is nothing like the heat and sounds and smells of killing and burning a tree. Wood burning is renewable. It produces lots of smoke and CO2. What’s not to love.

And it is catching on!  (h/t Tom Nelson)

“Wood, humanity’s earliest fuel for keeping warm, is being touted these days as the latest thing in renewable energy: a greener, often cheaper way to heat a home or building than burning oil or propane or consuming coal-fired electricity.

Save the coal. Kill and burn a tree.

It’s also less expensive to buy and install than solar panels or geothermal systems, advocates say. It’s the workhorse of renewable energy in Europe and should be in the United States,” said William Strauss, president of a Maine-based consulting firm specializing in what it calls “bioenergy.” He spoke recently at a day-long conference in Annapolis aimed at encouraging more use of wood in Maryland to heat homes, offices, schools and even hospitals.”

Bioenergy. Give tree killing and burning a nice new eco-friendly name and its win win!

Two-thirds of the renewable energy generated in Europe comes from burning wood or other plant-based material”

Sure, Germany and the UK have squandered hundreds of billions on wind and solar, but its good old fashioned CO2 producing burning that does the most work.

While some environmentalists are fully behind expanded reliance on wood-burning for heat, others say that newer stoves and boilers still generate potentially harmful air pollution, especially particulates that can aggravate asthma and cause serious long-term health problems.

They are even dumber than I thought they were.

They also worry that expanding government incentives for wood heat may slow development of other energy sources they think are much greener, such as solar.

Excellent.

And since burning anything to produce energy also puts carbon into the atmosphere, they doubt that promoting wood heat truly helps combat climate change.

Duh!

Coral is fine and thriving

Coral has nothing to fear from CO2 (the Australian):

“A WIDESPREAD belief that the world’s coral reefs face a calamitous future due to climate change is proving less resilient than the natural wonders themselves.

Rising sea temperatures, storm damage and ocean acidification have grabbed the headlines as looming threats to reef survival.

But as each concern is more thoroughly investigated, scientists are finding nature better equipped to cope than they had imagined.

The latest research, published in Nature: Climate Change today, blows away the theory that reefs were doomed due to rising ocean acidification caused by the higher take-up of carbon dioxide in the seas.

Researchers have found a common coralline algae that grows at the leading edge of coral reefs is not nearly as susceptible to changing ph levels as coral because it contains high levels of dolomite.

In fact, the dolomite-laden algae has a rate of dissolution six to 10 times lower than coral’s.

The good news is that dolomite-rich coralline algae is common in shallow coral reefs across the world.

“Our research suggests it is likely they will continue to provide protection for coral reef frameworks as carbon dioxide rises,” the paper says.”

 

Canada – Grid Square Choices – 5×5 = Warming and 1×1 = Cooling

Update: There are 54 5×5 grid squares in Canada with EC normals with 170 datapoints in the last 15 years. 29 are warming and 25 are cooling.

There are 199 1×1 grid squares using the same data. 116 are cooling and 83 are warming.

Previously I have looked at the 15 year trend for Environment Canada data up to Nov 2012 using 1×1 grids here, and 5×5 grids here.

Using 1×1 grid squares,  Canada is cooling at -0.089C / decade.

Using 5×5 grid squares, Canada is warming at 0.053C / decade.

Don’t the big guys like to use 5×5 grids? What a shock.

NOAA Nov 2012 – The East was Cold!

While NOAA’s data has been called into question, the November 2012 data is out for the contiguous USA.

The east was cold! 25 out of the 48 states were ranked 59 or under (which is pretty cold)

For example, North Carolina and Virgina’s November were ranked 11 out of 118, which means 107 were warmer! And The warmest November was in 1985 NC’s November in 1985 was 12.8F warmer than Nov 2012.

No state set a record for coldest or warmest. 9 of the state records were set in 1985.

Washington States November record was from 1899.

The table is sorted from lowest ranking (coldest) to warmest.

UK Tmax versus Sunshine are well correlated. Cleaner Air. More Sunshine.

Why would sunshine be higher? Cleaner air in the UK (until China and India started to burn a lot more coal) thanks to the Clean Air Acts of 1956 and 1968.

The loess curves bottom out around 1968/1972.
