Climate Alarmist Backfire: People Buying SUV’s So They Can Cope With ‘Extreme’ Weather

I see that the NY Times isn’t quite as thick as they used to be in this article about climate alarmist tactics backfiring.

“But there is every reason to believe that efforts to raise public concern about climate change by linking it to natural disasters will backfire. More than a decade’s worth of research suggests that fear-based appeals about climate change inspire denial, fatalism and polarization.”

“Some people, the report noted, “are likely to buy an SUV to help them through the erratic weather to come” for example, rather than support fuel-efficiency standards.”

Sea Ice Update April 10 2014 – Global Sea Ice Over 1,000,000 sq km Above Normal!!!!

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice Extent is 1,053,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,457,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 1 for the day. And that is 32nd daily record for the year.
  • Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -405,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean. That is just inside the one standard deviation mark.

How To Get Cheap High Speed Trains

I have a foolproof plan for cheap high speed rail.

hs_train

  • Take a medium speed train. Paint it in a new color scheme. And announce it is a new high speed train.
  • Wait until a stupid greenie holds a news conference demanding that the high speed trains run slower to save on CO2.
  • Have the train company announce that it will gladly comply with the greenies and run the new “high speed” train at “medium speed” train velocity.
  • Bank the savings.

Sea Ice Update April 8 2014 – Global Sea Ice 959,000 Above The Mean and Antarctica Set Another Record

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice Extent is 959,000 above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 4th for the day. And that is 4.61% above ‘normal’.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice Extent is 1,403,000 above the 1981-2010 mean. That is ranked 1st for the day. And that is 23.74% above ‘normal’. 30th Daily Record for this year.
  • Arctic Sea Ice Extent is -444,000 below the 1981-2010 mean. That is -2.97% below ‘normal’.

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Oscillation Pattern

I don’t know what it means, but I’ve been aware of an oscillation pattern in Antarctic Sea Ice Extent for some time. A week or two ago I made a slight change in one of my graphs to annotate the peaks and valleys with the year and now the pattern jumps out at you even more.

This graph is for day 95, but the pattern is similar in other parts of the year.

There has been since 1988 a  4 or 5 year oscillation where the ice extent goes to a valley in between peaks.  And the magnitude of the oscillation is growing.

These are not small oscillations. Sea Ice Extent as of today is 7,000,000 sq km.  The 2011 valley is 4,700,000 sq km. That is a 50% jump in sea ice on day 95 from 2011 to 2014.

I know the AMO has peaked and is poised to start down (it may take a few more years). But to repeat myself, I’m not sure what it means.

Sea Ice Update April 5 2014 – Global Sea Ice 3rd Highest For The Day

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice is 797,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is the 3rd highest for the day! And above one standard deviation.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice is  1,298,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.Highest for this day.
  • Arctic Sea Ice is 500,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is only 70,000 sq km outside the one standard deviation mark.

Putin: Helping Coal Make a Comeback in the Ukraine

It is too bad the EU has worked so hard to stop fracking in Europe. Europe might had have some spare natural gas to sell the Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Western-backed leaders scrambled on Friday to find new sources of energy after Russia hiked its gas price by 80 percent in response to the overthrow of Kiev’s pro-Kremlin regime.”

“We are now reviewing our electricity and fuel balance for 2014 with a view of using as much domestic coal as possible at the expense of natural gas,”
