Sea Ice Update March 7 2014 – Global Sea Ice Ice 194,000 sq km Above Mean

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice is 194,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 1% above the mean.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice is  835,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is 25.6% above the mean.
  • Arctic Sea Ice is 640,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 4.2% below the mean .

Canadian Weather Stations 1841 to 2014 – The Movie

Using the Environment Canada monthly summaries  I have made up 2 gif movies that show which weather stations reported data for each year from 1841.

1974 with 2826 is tops for number of stations. In comparison, 2014 so far only has 1215 stations. There were more stations reporting in 1951 than 2014.

(I don’t know why a weather station in South Dakota shows up in the monthly summaries.)

The 1841 to 1864 part is kind of slow. Toronto is the only station. One gif has Station Names. Not terribly readable. But fun. Click for bigger.

Remember How Climate Change Was Going To Kill Off Snow? North American Snow 3rd Highest. Ever.

In only two years — 1969 and 1978 — was there more snow on the ground in North America in early March than there is now.

As of Tuesday, North America is covered by the third-highest amount of snow this late in the season since records began in 1966, according to NOAA’s U.S. National Ice Center.

Only 1969 and 1978 had more snow cover at this point in the year, according to Sean Helfrich of NOAA’s National Ice Center.

Canada February 2014 – Monthly Mean Temperature Anomalies Mapped

I have mapped the February 2014 mean temperature anomalies in the Environment Canada monthly summaries that have “normals”. The anomalies are calculated from selected stations based on the 1971-2000 average.

The size if the dot represents the size of the anomaly. The 5C black dot in the top left hand corner represents 5C difference from “normal”. Red dots are warmer than normal. Blue are cooler. And Green are 0.

Most of the prairies averaged 5C or more below “normal”. Click for bigger.

Sea Ice Update March 5 2014 – Global Sea Ice Is Normal

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice is only 25,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 0.135% below the mean.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice is  716,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is 22.5% above the mean.
  • Arctic Sea Ice is 741,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 4.8% below the mean .

Canada February 2014 Visualized

The data is from the daily data put out by Environment Canada. (It is wrong sometimes)

These are ONLY the “Normals” stations (the stations EC calculates anomalies for from the 1971-2000 mean)

The black circle in the top left corner represents 5C divergence from the “Normals”. Blue is cold. Red is warm. Click for bigger. Refresh to make it start over.

There are 3 graphs: TMean,TMin and TMax. Feb 28 had average anomalies in the -8C range. Many were more than -10C. Polar Vortex!

Sea Ice Update March 3rd 2014 – Antarctic Sea Ice Extent 23% above normal

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice is only 77,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 0.4% below the mean. Global Sea Ice has been within one standard deviation of the 1981-2010 mean since July 25 2013

Climate Change Caused Never Ending Drought in California … oops. Nevermind.

Climate Change Caused a never ending drought In California … except for the never ending part.

“The storm – the largest since 2010”

“This is no drought-buster, but it’s a nice, fat down payment” in the water bank, he said.”

“As of Saturday evening, the storm had dropped more than 4 inches of rain in downtown Los Angeles, 5 inches in Van Nuys and almost 12 inches at Cogswell Dam in the Angeles National Forest, according to the National Weather Service.”

Rainfall over the last month has helped facilitate the salmon’s return to their spawning grounds, said the local water district officials who track their numbers.”

“Ski resorts were delighted with fresh snow that promised to extend their season

WAIT … I thought the end of snow was here because of climate change?

But my  favorite quotation is: “The storm wasn’t all bad news, though.

Bad News!!!!!!!!!!!!  Rain in a drought is now BAD NEWS???????????

Why is rain bad news? Because it spoils the climate change con game. In a few weeks the AGW Cult will be complaining about too much rain and how climate change causes floods.

British Columbia February 2014 – Coldest and Warmest

Using data from Environment Canada, these are the 25 coldest/warmest days in BC weather stations.

Something new I learned was that PUNTZI MOUNTAIN was a Pinetree Line base. While I was never anywhere near Puntzi Mountain, a long, long time ago I did spend 2 nights at the Kamloops Pinetree Line base. The “new” computer room was pretty big. The “old” computer room was massive.

Sea Ice Update February 28 2014 – Antarctic Sea Ice Extent 24% above normal

A quick update for sea ice extent:

  • Global Sea Ice is only 50,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 0.3% below the mean.
  • Antarctic Sea Ice is  720,000 sq km above the 1981-2010 mean. That is 24% above the mean.  I’m pretty sure day 51 was minimum. Extent is 170,000 above what it was on Day 51. That would be the 4th highest minimum of all time!
  • Arctic Sea Ice is 769,000 sq km below the 1981-2010 mean.  That is 5% below the mean .
